Connecting organisations in Aotearoa to innovate, protect and enrich our climate ecosystem.
Tātaki Auckland Unlimited partnered with DNA to design the website for Climate Connect Aotearoa, an initiative that enables organisations to combine their efforts to innovate and solve climate challenges across the energy, food, built environment and transport sectors.
Overview.
There is a wide range of organisations that are either actively involved in tackling climate change mitigation and adaptation or interested in learning what steps they can take on a variety of scales. The team at Tātaki Auckland Unlimited recognised the need to connect disparate organisations and Climate Connect Aotearoa was born with a focus on accelerating cross-sector connections to facilitate long-lasting action.
Challenge.
The challenge was to provide a digital hub for organisations in Aotearoa to connect and collaborate on climate challenges.

Approach.
Immersions with key stakeholders and collaboration with Tātaki Auckland Unlimited informed the direction of Climate Connect Aotearoa.
The UX process involved conducting a user needs analysis, some user flows, information architecture and wireframes to form the building blocks for the site. Experience concepts were designed and iterated into a detailed design outcome to be handed off to Sparks Interactive for development.

Solution.
The final design system is responsive, expandable and modular, allowing it to be configured to suit different screen sizes and content types while maintaining a consistent design style. This ensures that the website is future-proofed for additional content loading, further development and enhancements.

Outcome.
Climate Connect Aotearoa has been iterated across two design phases to date, adding additional bilingual controls, the Impact Measurement Dashboard (pending launch), and the matchmaking tool (pending launch). The challenges are currently being developed and Climate Connect Aotearoa is engaging with potential stakeholders and organisations to formulate the challenges.

Embracing Māori knowledge.
He Kete Mātauranga was introduced to support the climate challenges by providing a te ao Māori perspective, uplifting Māori knowledge systems and frameworks. This was reflected in a unique treatment of the design system (colour and use of the tohu graphic on cards) on the He Kite Mātauranga landing page and across related news or knowledge hub articles.
Impact Measurement Dashboard.
An impact measurement dashboard was introduced as a modular dashboard to showcase a range of data with the ability to add visuals and graphs, with the intent to provide updates on progress (whether that be on a particular challenge or on Climate Connect Aotearoa as a whole) to demonstrate impact and build confidence.
Matchmaking / Whiria te Tāngata.
The matchmaking tool was developed to help users make relevant connections, get involved in challenges, and find funding opportunities, resources, and tools. A step-by-step quiz and filtering allow users to narrow down the results, which appear in modular cards under the relevant headings to provide an organised yet engaging experience.
