Making provenance a defining ingredient.

Little Island Creamery makes high-quality coconut and plant-based milk and ice cream products with an attitude that is fresh, simple, ethical and uncomplicated – distributing nationwide and exploring markets internationally.

Challenge.

To improve sales performance and provide clarity on future product development Little Island needed to better understand the behaviours and preferences of both dairy-free and health-conscious consumers.

Approach.

A human-centred design approach investigated consumer preference at point of purchase – to better understand opportunities and roadblocks. Insight led to minor but critical refinements of Little Islands value proposition, brand messaging, naming and packaging system making the most of their products provenance and dairy-free status.

Solution.

The primary source of Little Island’s coconut milk is Samoa where they ethically support farmers and workers. Key insights from customers suggested that despite its name and logo Little Island needed to tell their provenance and dairy-free story better. We experimented and tested various solutions – and landed on a 'tapa' cloth inspired illustration wrapping the bottles – created in partnership with a local Pacifica artist.

Little Island now has a stronger brand story and a more effective packaging system across its products – and an ever-increasing network of distributors. Customers love the products, are devoted to the brand and sales grew as a result.
